Throughout the ages, mugwort has been valued both for its culinary applications and its beneficial properties. This remarkable plant carries a rich tapestry of traditional folklore, often associated with enhancing dream experiences. Found growing along creek banks and waysides, Artemisia vulgaris, a member of the Asteraceae family, is recognized for its leaves' silvery sheen underneath. Mugwort herb is commonly brewed into a soothing mugwort tea and can be employed as incense, infused into dream pillows, or blended into botanical vinegars.

Mugwort thrives abundantly in the British Isles, boasting angular, purple stalks that reach heights exceeding three feet. Its dark green leaves feature a downy texture on the undersides. The name "mugwort" is believed to stem from its historical use as a flavoring agent for beer, predating the widespread use of hops. The botanical name derives from Artemis, the Greek goddess associated with hunting, fertility, forests, and hills. Remarkably, Roman soldiers would place mugwort in their sandals to alleviate fatigue during long marches. Native Americans have associated mugwort with witchcraft, as they believed that rubbing the leaves on their bodies would repel spirits, while wearing a necklace of mugwort leaves could safeguard against dreams involving the deceased. Legend holds that John the Baptist adorned himself with a girdle of mugwort for protection during his time in the wilderness. Mugwort also carries magical attributes, serving as a safeguard for weary travelers on the road and offering general protection against malevolent forces in the spiritual realms.
